Upper School at Stratford

Upper School English students build strong writing, speaking, and analytical skills through the study of classic and contemporary texts, enriched by debates, seminars, presentations, and contextual grammar and vocabulary instruction. Through research, collaboration, and discussion, students develop empathy and learn to thoughtfully engage with diverse perspectives and sources.

The Upper School Science Department engages students in mastering scientific concepts through a balanced approach that combines lectures, hands-on laboratories, current technology, and real-world applications. Through research, data analysis, and community outreach, students build critical thinking skills while developing a genuine joy for scientific discovery.

The Social Studies Department builds students’ understanding of the historical forces shaping our world through lectures, primary sources, debate, writing, and simulations that foster inquiry, research, and nuanced argumentation. Beginning with human geography and early world history, students progress through modern world and U.S. history before culminating in practical studies of government, economics, and personal finance.

The World Languages Department offers a communicative, interdisciplinary approach that blends grammar instruction, comprehensible input, and cultural studies across music, art, history, and film. Through real-world applications, authentic interactions, and immersive experiences, students build empathy, cultural appreciation, and confidence communicating in the target language.

The Upper School Arts program offers multidisciplinary opportunities that foster creativity, critical thinking, and social-emotional growth through collaborative and expressive learning. Across Visual, Performing, and Media Arts, students develop strong communication skills, emotional intelligence, and confidence through individual expression and creative teamwork.
