Our History

At the heart of Stratford Academy’s mission is a simple yet profound motto: Libertas Excellentiae - Freedom for Excellence. These three words have guided the school since its founding in 1960, reflecting a commitment to cultivating both the independence and the responsibility required to pursue one’s highest potential.

History and Mission

From humble beginnings, Stratford Academy has grown into a vibrant, thriving community of over 700 students and 130 faculty and staff. Among the school’s founding principles is intellectual independence — teaching young people how to think instead of what to think and where to look instead of what to see.

Our Mission

Stratford Academy is an independent, non-sectarian, college-preparatory school that challenges its students to achieve their full potential by providing a superior education for students with diverse backgrounds and talents and developing responsible, ethical, life-long learners.

Freedom for excellence. These are bold words in a world where the creeping paralysis of mass mediocrity threatens to engulf our civilization. The mantle of greatness is a cloak to fit the individual, not a blanket covering the masses... at Stratford we will stress individual achievement to the highest level of each student's potential... Welcome at Stratford are the virtues of excellence, honesty, effort, and ambition - laziness and mediocrity must seek their reward elsewhere.
