Led by head coach Jeff Treadway and assistant coach Julie Long, the Stratford Fastpitch Eaglettes entered the 2014 season with hopes of finding success in their first year in the GHSA. The Eaglettes (17-12) did not disappoint and made the playoffs in their debut season in the GHSA. The squad of 14 players had some great wins against local rivals Tattnall and MDS, as well as some schools in much larger classifications including Warner Robins and Columbus High Schools. After narrowly defeating a very strong Excel Christian in a best two-of-three competition in the Sweet 16 round of the GHSA A State tournament, the Eaglettes advanced to the Elite 8 where they won their first game 11-0 against Calvary Day. The Eaglettes then lost their next two playoff games, one of which was to ELCA who ultimately won the GHSA A state title, finishing tied for fifth place in the state. The team will miss the talent and leadership of its six seniors Lucy Bobbitt, Amelia Brown, Morgan Maier, Kaley Nystrom, McKenna Sibley and Mary Elizabeth Wade next year, but looks forward to the challenges that lie ahead entering their second season in the GHSA. Congratulations to senior McKenna Sibley, junior Mary Wilson Avant and freshman Tory Dover for earning Region 7A first-team honors and senior Amelia Brown and junior Avery Layton for earning 7A second-team honors. Junior pitcher Mary Wilson Avant finished the season with a record-breaking 234 strikeouts, 33 RBI’s and a .482 batting average earning her an All-State second-team selection by the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association.
